Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor and businessman who revolutionized modern technology and media. His mimeograph machine, the first commercialized electro-mechanical device, increased efficiency in printing and made mass production of newspapers easier.

In 1891, he acquired The North American Phonograph Company, which was the foundation of the commercial recording industry. He founded Motion Picture Patents Company, which held a monopoly on the industry for many years. He is also credited with being the first person to film a motion picture.
