Seymour Cray: The Father of Supercomputers Who Pushed The Boundaries of Processing Power Did you know that the design of modern-day computers owes its success to the hard work of a man named Seymour Cray? Known as the “father of supercomputers,” Seymour Cray had a life-long fascination with technology and his legacy lives on in the computers and other machines we use today. Seymour Cray was born in 1925 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. As a boy, he showed an aptitude for engineering and made several early inventions such as a root-beating machine that helped farmers break through soil quickly. After graduating from high school, Cray soon found his way into computing and began his professional career with the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium. In 1956 Cray left the consortium and started Cray Research, Inc. At the time, computers were large, unwieldy machines.
