Ted Nelson: The Father of Hypertext Who Linked The World’s Information Ted Nelson, an American computer scientist, is widely credited as the inventor of the hypertext and coining the term ‘hypertext’. His vision of an interconnected world of digital documents became what is now commonly known as the World Wide Web. He has been referred to as the “Father of Hypertext” and his impact on the development of the technology we now use to access information is immense. Despite the fact that many of his visions for hypertext were never realized, his ideas continue to shape the way we think about and interact with information in the digital age. Nelson was born in 1934 in New York City, the son of a famous journalist. He graduated from Swarthmore College with a degree in mathematics in 1955 and went on to get his master’s degree in sociology at Harvard.
