Tim Berners-Lee: The Father of The Web Who Linked The Globe

What would life be like if we couldn’t access online information and content with the click of a button? No one can remember such a recent time, all thanks to the incredible innovations of Tim Berners-Lee. Berners-Lee was the visionary and revolutionary scientist who is credited with revolutionizing communication and commerce as we know it today.

Born on June 8, 1955 in London, England, Berners-Lee attended competent schools including The Queen's College, Oxford and attended the main library of Oxford every day when he was 7 or 8-years-old. It is here that he read Encyclopedia Britannica continuously and where he developed his lifelong obsession with technology. It is also highly likely that his world-altering curiosity and interests can be attributed to his parents. His father, a mathematics professor and his mother, a computer scientist--employed in the first commercial program at the University of Manchester-likely gave him the ideal environment to spur his passion for science and computer technology.https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?f=First Web Server.jpg&w=1000 from wikimedia

Berners-Lee was most famous for his work on the World Wide Web. He proposed the project in March 1989 while working at CERN in Geneva as a software engineer. Shortly after his proposal, Berners-Lee created the first-ever web browser in 1990. Afterward, he worked on the hypertext markup language or html and the web server hypertext transfer protocol or http. This marks the beginning of the Web and its evolution.

In 1994, Berners-Lee co-founded the World Wide Web Consortium which ensures the long-term growth of the Web. This incredible invention was a game changer for the world; it allowed people to communicate quickly and effectively and it allowed smaller businesses access to a massive consumer base at a minimal cost. Furthermore, this invention has changed the way academics conduct research and the way companies conduct marketing campaigns.

Today, Tim Berners-Lee is considered one of the world's most prestigious scientists. He is a Fellow of the Royal Sciences, a Trustee of the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre and an advocate for data access and an open and safe web use. In his goal of advancing the World Wide Web and promoting the value of Web literacy, Berners-Lee created the Web Foundation, which declared its second-decade in 2009, with a goal of creating an open Web which would be accessible, useful and fully implemented worldwide. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?f=Sir_Tim_Berners-Lee_(cropped).jpg&w=1000 from wikimedia

Indeed, Tim Berners-Lee has proven to be a visionary, a revolutionary and a technological genius. His revolutionary creation of the World Wide Web has forever changed the way we communicate, share knowledge and conduct business. In closing, Berners-Lee’s accomplishments have truly been a gift not only to the world, but to future generations to come.
