Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie: The Co-Creators of The C Programming Language

The more than four decades of computing history have seen many great minds who have shaped and revolutionized the way computers are used today. Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie are two such names that will remain imperishable in the annals of computing history.

Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie were the pride of the Bell Labs. Being part of the team at the Department of Computer Science at Bell Labs, the duo contributed to the development of the C Programming Language. Contributing to the research and development of Unix, the two geniuses stepped up to create a new programming language with an easier to use system for the Bell Labs.

Kernighan and Ritchie’s efforts gave birth to one of the most influential computer programming languages of all time - The C Programming Language. Being first released in 1972, C still continues to be widely used for many applications from web programming to embedded systems. Written as a high-level language, C provides the platform for the basic building blocks for all the computer applications today. This has made C one of the most widely used and highly reliable languages being used in the computing world.https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?f=Brian Kernighan in 2012 at Bell Labs 3.jpg&w=1000 from wikimedia

Brian Kernighan was born in Toronto, Canada in 1942. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics, Brian moved to Princeton where he received his PhD in electrical engineering and computer science. At the Princeton University, Kernighan worked as an assistant professor till 1968. Following this, he joined the Bell Labs and worked on many projects such as Unix, AWK and the influential C Programming Language.

Dennis Ritchie was born two years later in 1944. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in physics, Ritchie moved to Harvard University for his master’s degree in Applied Mathematics and then to Bell Labs for his PHD. As part of the same team as Kernighan, Dennis contributed to many of the same projects such as Unix, AWK and the C Programming Language. Throughout his career, Dennis was the principal architect of the Unix OS.

In 1978, the work Kernighan and Ritchie had done on the C Language was published in the form of the influential book - The C Programming Language. This made a great contribution to the computing world, providing stable and powerful base for software developers. It has also become one of the most widely used programming language up to this day.

The fame of Kernighan and Ritchie streamed far beyond the limits of computer programming. The so called “K&R” format has become the popular method of formatting and indenting code. Many of their works were so influential, even libraries were opened in their names in the University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Furthermore, they were both awarded the National Medal of Technology. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?f=Dennis Ritchie (right) Receiving Japan Prize.jpeg&w=1000 from wikimedia

Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie’s works have not only revolutionized the way computers are used today, but it’s also helped to lay the foundation for many of the applications and systems used in our world today. It is still one of the most influential programming languages with its power and stability. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?f=Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie--1973.jpg&w=1000 from wikimedia
