Sidney Taurel: The Expert Who Brought Statistics into the Forefront of Computer Science

Sidney Taurel was a famous computer scientist and statistician who made significant contributions to the development of statistical software packages. He is often recognized for his groundbreaking work in advancing the field of statistics in computer science. Taurel was the founder and president of the statistical software firm SAS Institute, and later the formation of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS).

Taurel was born in London, United Kingdom in 1927. He studied mathematics at the University of Cambridge, receiving his B.A. in 1947. Following his studies, he joined the British computers company ICL, and soon earned a place in the statistical department. While working there, he developed some of the earliest and most popular statistical software packages. He went on to become the first director of the ICL Statistical Analysis Department, and in 1964 he left ICL to found his own statistical software firm, SAS Institute.

SAS Institute became the leading provider of statistical software for the next several decades. Taurel was a major advocate of statistical programming and pushed for the advancement of such software packages. He wrote several books and papers that discussed different methods of statistical programming and algorithms, and even developed an integrated scripting language for statistical computing. His efforts resulted in the incorporation of statistics into the mainstream of computer science.

At SAS Institute, Taurel focused on ensuring that the software provided by the company was up to date and met the needs of its customers. He devoted much of his time to developing analytical tools and publishing research papers on related topics. He was instrumental in the emergence of the programming language SAS, which is now widely used to analyze data in the field of statistics.

In recognition of his contributions to the development of statistical software, Taurel was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received several honors and awards throughout his life, including the National Medal of Technology in 1996.

By the time of his death in 2009, Taurel had become one of the most influential figures in the field of computer science, particularly in regards to the significant contributions he made to furthering the development and acceptance of statistics within the discipline. Taurel passed away at the age of 81.

Sidney Taurel undoubtedly left an immense mark on the world of computer science and statistics. His work has greatly impacted the way that data is analyzed and interpreted in today's world.
