Andrew Yao: The Cryptographer Who Developed Secure Network Protocols

What does it take to become a true genius? For Dr. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, Cryptography pioneer and world-renowned computer scientist, the qualities are undeniable. For the last four decades, Dr. Yao has been revolutionizing the future of network security and digital communication.

Dr. Yao was born in Shanghai, China in 1946 and is currently a professor at Princeton University in the Computer Science department. In 1975, he earned the Bachelor of Science degree from the National Taiwan University and he then went on to complete his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1981. His career trajectory has earned him a number of prestigious awards, including the Turing Award, the highest honour given to computer scientists.

Throughout his career, Dr. Yao has been at the forefront of developing secure network protocols and cryptosystems. His work has enabled secure communication mediums over the internet, conduct trusted and verifiable computing, and securely protect the secrecy of data which can be used to prevent hackers from nefarious activities.

Furthermore, his new protocols, coined Yao’s garbled circuit, allowed for secure two-party computation by allowing two separate parties to accurately assess the output of a computation without revealing anything else about the process. His breakthroughs have enabled a world of secure online transactions, shopping and other online activities.

What makes Dr. Yao’s work so impressive is his unique approach to tackling digital security tasks. He has a knack for approaching cybersecurity problems with creativity and an ability to see beyond convention. For example, for a problem where the parties involve in a protocol can’t agree on a shared random number needed for message encryption, Dr. Yao came up with an inventive solution that solved it without reliance on external trusted third parties.

Dr. Yao’s prolific work has earned him the respect of his peers and helped cement his reputation as a world-class researcher. Over the years, he has earned extensive recognition, including five honorary doctoral degrees, producing over 100 peer-reviewed publications and mentoring dozens of students.
