Paul Allen was born in 1953 in Seattle, having only one sibling, his sister Jody. His parents were both librarians, however his mother died when he was only fourteen years old.

From a young age, he was drawn to computers, teaching himself programming in high school. It was at this same time that he met Bill Gates, his future business partner, while they attended Seattle’s Lakeside School. After graduating, he pursued his interest in computers, studying Computer Science at Washington State University before dropping out to pursue his business endeavours.

In 1975, Gates and Allen founded Microsoft in partnership. The fledgling company was created to serve their shared passion: computers. The two men quickly become close friends and had enormous respect for each other’s capabilities and ideas.

Gates was the quintessential businessman, unafraid to work long hours to make sure customers received the best possible product. Microsoft and the PC Industry Revolution

The partnership between Paul Allen and Bill Gates was groundbreaking and revolutionised the PC industry. Microsoft raced to stay ahead in the software industry and soon enough their products for computer manufacturers became the industry standard. Microsoft started to scale with new products such as MS-DOS and Windows 95. By the late 90s, Microsoft had become the most valuable company in the world.

Allen left Microsoft in 1983 in order to focus on other ventures, however, his innovative spirit continued to lead his work. His deep interest in technology and computing made him responsible for a number of inventions, software and businesses throughout the following decades.

Amazon, Vulcan Inc. and Philanthropy

Allen founded or co-founded a number of different ventures outside of Microsoft. He co-founded Amazon with Jeff Bezos and the pair created one of the oldest online shopping websites. Vulcan Inc. was another initiative founded by Allen in 1986 to manage his investments and philanthropic efforts.

In addition to his business ventures, Allen was invested in philanthropy. He donated billion of dollars to a number of causes including disease research, medical science, and youth education. His foundation, The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, has generously funded projects in the Pacific Northwest, including a major expansion of the Seattle Seahawks football stadium.

Paul Allen’s Legacy

Paul Allen died from septic shock in 2018, leaving behind an inspiring story. As one of the most influential technology pioneers of our era, his entrepreneurial spirit and hard work will continue to be seen for generations.
