Larry Ellison: The Software Billionaire Who Led Oracle To Greatness

It often takes a certain type of individual to build an extraordinary success story in the business world. One of those rare people is Larry Ellison, the billionaire founder of software-giant Oracle, who worked his way up from humble beginnings to the lofty heights of success he enjoys today.

Ellison grew up in suburban Chicago and, after failing to finish college, moved to California. It wasn't a particularly smooth ride, but Ellison's desire to succeed fuelled his ambition and he eventually joined the staff of Amdahl Corporation as a programmer. While working there, Ellison designed a database that was eventually adopted by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). This eventually led him to decide to create his own software firm and in 1977 he founded Software Development Laboratories, popularly known as 'SDL'. This company would eventually become Oracle Corporation.

At the time, Oracle was one of the first companies to create a completely network-based database management system and Ellison was quick to take advantage of the emerging marketplace. As competition from other companies in the industry heated up, Ellison was forced to make tough decisions in order to keep it ahead of the game. In the tech industry, Ellison is seen as a legend, having been instrumental in the development of several of the most important concepts in database engineering and software development. He also developed an object-oriented programming language and database, which helped to make Oracle a household name in the industries it operates in. Ellison is famed for his tenacious business style, often using aggressive moves to stave off competitors and move the company forward. He is also renowned for his eccentric attitude: he famously splashed a whopping $200 million on a single yacht, and has considered life-extension technology seriously enough to donate $43 million to a research project into it. But what really sets Ellison apart is his drive; he once said: “If you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what’s next.”

It was this attitude that led Ellison to take Oracle from an at-times struggling business to the strata of high technology that it enjoys today. By taking risks, leading from the front, and always looking for what’s next, Larry Ellison has cemented his status as a technology titan.
