Born in 1906, Grace Hopper was an American mathematician and computer scientist. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College in 1928, and went on to earn her Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale in 1934. She was then appointed to the Harvard faculty, where she began teaching computer programming and computing procedures.

Hopper was one of the earliest advocates of machine-independent programming languages. She had the foresight to recognize the need for a high-level programming language that would be universal across multiple computer platforms. In 1952, she developed the first version of the A-0 compiler, which allowed programmers to write code in English-like syntax that could then be transformed into a language that the machine could understand.

In 1959, Hopper developed a program called FLOW-MATIC, which was the first widely-used English-language programming language. Hopper also wrote numerous programming manuals and manuals for the various computer languages she developed.
