Sabeer Bhatia: The Founder of Hotmail Who Transformed The Way We Connect
Sabeer Bhatia is a tech visionary and self-made millionaire. He is most notably the co-founder of Hotmail--the free web-based email service--which would eventually become the biggest email provider in the world with over 360 million users when it was purchased by Microsoft in 1997. Bhatia is a pioneer in the realm of cyber security and has since been recognized by various Silicon Valley companies for his groundbreaking innovations.
In 1996, Bhatia and fellow technologist Jack Smith developed the concept for Hotmail, a web-based email service that would soon become ubiquitous and revolutionize digital communication. Instead of competing with Bill Gates’ business, which had been highly successful with the paying customers in its Microsoft Network, Bhatia wanted to create an Internet service that allowed individuals to communicate online without having to pay.
The simplicity and convenience of Hotmail’s user-friendly interface was unparalleled. It allowed users to quickly create a mail address and check their email from any computer, making it one of the first revolutionary Internet services. It was also the first service that provided users 1MB of free storage and offered the ability to embed images and other files directly into an email.
To accompany the launch of the service, Bhatia and Smith used a clever marketing tactic. At the bottom of every email sent through Hotmail, users could view the phrase: “Get your free email at Hotmail.” This phrase quickly caught on and before long, Hotmail had gained millions of users. In an interview with Harvard Magazine, Bhatia explained that, “When we saw that and people started sharing the product and it went viral like that, we thought, ‘Yes! This is going to be an amazing success.’”
By 1998, the number of Hotmail users around the world had ballooned to 30 million people and Bhatia and Smith were able to capitalize on the success of their product by selling it to Microsoft for a reported $400 million. Bhatia had achieved his dream of becoming a self-made tech mogul and also created a product that irrevocably changed the way we connect with one another.
Today, Bhatia continues to be an icon and mentor in the tech sphere. He has since gone on to found several companies, including Jaxtr—a free phone-to-phone call service, and Arzoo.com, India’s first online shopping portal.
Bhatia has achieved tremendous success and continues to pave the way for the future of digital communication. He is a true role model for aspiring entrepreneurs who wish to make their mark on the world and innovate for the betterment of humanity.
