Radia Perlman: The Mother of Networking Who Redefined How We Use the Internet

Radia Perlman is an icon of innovation, largely regarded as the ‘Mother of Networking’. Her inventions and contributions to technology permeate digital communication and information-sharing as we know them today, and she has made huge strides in pushing the boundaries of how we use the Internet.

Radia Perlman was born in Queens, New York in the 1950’s, but has spent much of her life in the Boston area. She stored a passion for technology at an early age. At 15 she began studying mathematics and computer science, and she went on to study at MIT, where she wrote a book on network technology.

Her work has resulted in numerous groundbreaking inventions and inventions that have been implemented in many of the technologies that we use every day. Perlman is a prolific writer and teacher, having written several books and articles about networking, networking protocols, and digital communication. She’s also a regular speaker at conferences and other tech events.

Perhaps most significantly, Radia Perlman has been recognised with numerous awards acknowledging her for her impressive achievements. This includes two honorary doctorates, the Turing Award, the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal, the 1997 IEEE Internet Award, and many more.

There’s no doubt that Radia Perlman has achieved amazing things and is an inspiration for innovators everywhere. What makes her story so remarkable, is the way that her inventions continue to shape the way have access, use, and interact with the Internet.

Radia Perlman is one of the true legends of technology, an IT titan responsible for introducing of many of the conventions and protocols that have allowed users to access, use, and share information in the way we do today. What an incredible legacy to leave!
